Green-Wood Cemetery
Novice green thumbs should hitch a ride to Brooklyn’s historic Green-Wood Cemetery (cue creepy music) for “TU-MULCH-UOUS AND TREE-MENDOUS,” a day of free high-grade mulch (sounds like a juice fast ingredient), free trees—provided on a first-come, first-served basis by the New York Restoration Project and MillionTreesNYC—and free gardening advice from Green-Wood horticulture experts. Each tree, from fruit trees to small flowering trees, weighs about 30 pounds, and about 100 trees will be given away to New York residents, so get there early. This could be a good time to reread Betty Smith’s classic novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn; it takes place in Williamsburg, but trees do grow in Manhattan too.
