On Monday May 12, Diane Von Furstenberg, Theory’s Andrew Rosen (above) and Andre Balazs will co-chair and host the not-for-profit Meatpacking District Improvement Association’s fundraiser, Open Market.
The High Line Stages will be transformed into an interactive shopping, dining and music event featuring pretty much every business with a bricks-and-mortar spot in the ‘hood. There will be an opportunity to shop a bunch of sample sales all in one place, including DVF, Theory, Helmut Lang, Rag & Bone, Tory Burch, and Alice + Olivia. Also, Exhale Spa is offering free 10 minute massages, worth queueing up for before the crowd gets too crazy. The organizers are predicting a huge turnout and hope to kick off more regular, similar events.
One hundred per-cent of Monday’s proceeds will go to MDIA’s efforts to improve the neighborhood through a variety of public initiatives. With a host committee comprised of Olivier Theyskens, Tory Burch, Mario Batali, Marcus Wainwright and David Neville of Rag & Bone, Mazdack Rassi and Chelsea Leyland, it is safe to bet that the event will be a fantastic, shop-worthy celebration of all that Meatpacking has to offer.

Open Market will be well worth the admission fees, in terms of value for money as a day out and for a taste of some delicious, deluxe local eats. Basic $150 admission ticket covers food and drink provided by The Standard Grill, Soho House (above), Morimoto, Hotel Gansevoort, and Buddakan. A $350 VIP ticket, brings early access to the event and entry to the after party at Soho House.
The MDIA is responsible for supporting the business community with PR driven events throughout the year. Lauren Danziger, executive director, said that it also acts as a Business Improvement District (BID) and runs supplemental services like sanitation, beautification, and security. “While the Meatpacking area has undergone an evolution quickly over the past few years and is known as an upscale area, the area hasn’t seen the equivalent increase in services from the city,” she said. MDIA initiatives include the deployment of a daily clean team and the beautification of public plazas. Soon, says Ms. Danziger, they hope to institute a public safety program. The Meatpacking nabe needs your help to get in shape for the arrival of the Whitney Museum, which is set to break ground this month and open next year. If you’re one of those who makes a bit of a hot mess outside Bar Nana on Thursday nights, maybe it’s time to give back.
