If we were high school students trying to get our #rage on, we would be getting pretty mad at Andrew Cuomo by now.
Recently, the governor announced the results of a $147,000 decoy operation designed to crack down on the sale of alcohol to minors. The State Liquor Authority paid a visit to 74 liquor stores across all five boroughs, and 32 of them sold alcohol to a minor.
“The law is the law, and we will continue do whatever it takes to crack down on underage drinking and hold accountable those who serve alcohol to minors,” Governor Cuomo said in a release. “Our message is simple: If you put children at risk by placing alcohol in their hands, you will face the consequences.”
The SLA worked with a part-time unit from April 17 to May 1, conducting seven details across 74 stores. The part-time unit included four underage decoys who actually entered the store to buy alcohol.
Brooklyn fared the worst when it came to ID’ing. A total of 15 out of 16 Brooklyn stores willingly sold alcohol to the undercover minor. Half of the stores in both Queens and Staten Island failed to ID, while five out of 21 stores in Manhattan did the same.
The Bronx won the underage buzz-kill award, with only one store selling out of 15.
All stores charged will face “civil penalties of up to $10,000 per violation, with fines starting from $2,500 to $3,000 for a first time offense. Repeat offenders also face potential suspension or revocation of their licenses.”
“Preventing the sale of alcohol to minors is a priority for the State Liquor Authority and these underage sweeps will continue, SLA Chairman Dennis Rosen said in the same release. “Licensees must make a concerted effort to ensure they are not selling to minors. This includes taking the sensible, simple, and straightforward step of checking the ID of anyone that might be underage.”
The release also listed the all liquor stores that sold alcohol to the minors during the operation, so gather your pitchforks and torches I suppose.
