Lena Dunham’s Music Video Directorial Debut: ‘I Wanna Get Better’

Because being nominated for an MTV Music Video Award is one of the final steps to the GIRLS creator getting her own EGOTMV.

Yesterday, Lena Dunham and boyfriend Jack Antonoff debuted their first collaboration: a video for his solo project, Bleachers. (You’ll recognize Mr. Antonoff as the lead guitarist for the terribly-punctuated band Fun. or from the various pictures of him as Ms. Dunham’s arm candy.)

It’s a great video–what else would you expect from Ms. Dunham, who is best when setting up little tableaus of Woody Allen-meets-Wes Anderson perfection–that stars Mr. Antonoff as a hipster who is, improbably, a therapist. “Jack, if you could even begin to examine yourself the way you examine everyone else, be that analytical—judgmental, that’s the word—well then maybe we could get somewhere,” his girlfriend tells him in the beginning of the song, “I Wanna Get Better.” (And yes, it only does get better from there.)

I don’t want to make this too personal, but last night I had a dream where I saw Lena Dunham and was like “Oh, I LOVED that music video you just directed!” I was lying, because I only watched it this morning, and dream-me got called out on it pretty hard by an uncharacteristically dismissive dream-Lena.

What does it all mean? Who knows: I’ll have to remember to bring it up to my therapist this afternoon.
