It’s a good thing chicken soup is also good for the soul.
More than 400 students at Montclair High School in Montclair, New Jersey were home sick this week with a brutal stomach virus.
The sick students, along with 50 ill staff members, make up 20 percent of the school’s population. The outbreak began on Wednesday, with 170 people out sick; this number more than doubled on Thursday.
Students said the school was a ghost town over the past few days. “The halls are completely empty,” a student identified only as Keeley told PIX News. “In a class of 30, there would be seven kids.”
The bug’s symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and stomach cramps.
Dr. Jeff Rabrich, medical director at St. Luke’s Hospital in Manhattan, told Fox that viruses like this one are transmitted easily through touching germy objects like doorknobs.
To that end, custodial crews have been scrubbing down the school all week, and will be at it again this weekend.Administration is also pressing students to wash their hands and stay home if they feel sick.
Hopefully this epidemic will pass as quickly as the Fordham University mumps outbreak did.
