Academy Award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman, 46, was found dead in a New York apartment earlier today, report The New York Times. Mr. Hoffman, who had appeared in such films as Todd Solondz's Happiness, Capote, The Master, Magnolia, The Savages and Synecdoche, New York, was also known for his dramatic stage work, notably splitting time in the lead roles for Sam Shepard's True West with John C. Reilly, and appearing in a 2012 Broadway adaptation of Death of a Salesman.

The actor, who was born in Rochester, NY, had long battled with drug addiction in the past, and early reports from The New York Post, The Times and other publications have attributed Mr. Hoffman's early demise to an overdose.

Mr. Hoffman, a thoughtful, deeply compelling actor with a wide range of gifts--he could make you laugh, cry and feel horribly uncomfortable, all at the same time--will be missed deeply by the New York community. A staple of the Greenwich neighborhood, the thespian embodied many of the qualities we attribute to NYC celebrity: taciturn humor about his fame, versatility and a glancing interest in overpriced real estate. He will be remembered as one of the best character actors of our generation.

RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman: You were fucking awesome.
