Young adult writer Ned Vizzini died yesterday of apparent suicide, The Los Angeles Times reports.

As a Stuyvesant high school student, Mr. Vizzini, a city kid who grew up in Park Slope, wrote humorous and poignant essays about the anxiety of being a teenager for The New York Press and The New York Times. The essays were collected in a book called Teen Angst? Nah.... that was published when he was 19. His 2006 book It's Kind of a Funny Story, based on his own experience of a brief hospitalization for depression as a teenager, was turned into a movie with Zach Galifianakis.

Mr. Vizzini is also the other of three other YA books: Be More ChillThe Other Normals and House of Secrets and wrote for television shows.

Mr. Vizzini spoke at schools about teen depression and navigating the transition from adolescence to adulthood. He lived in Los Angeles with his wife, a book critic, and two-year-old son.
