Rick Stengel, the managing editor of Time, is leaving to go to The U.S. State Department, Politico/Capital reports.
Mr. Stengel, who has helmed the newsweekly since 2006, is expected to be named under secretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs. Time's deputy managing editor Nancy Gibbs is expected to fill Mr. Stengel's position at the magazine.
"I think he's looking for something fresh to do, and the magazine's looking for some fresh leadership because it's such a different place now than when he came in," a former Time editor told Capital.
In September, the magazine got some fresh leadership when Time announced that Joe Ripp would succeed Laura Lang as CEO. In March, after a brief flirtation with Meredith Corporation, Time Warner announced that it would spin-off Time Inc. into a separate print division.
The previous under secretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs, Tara Sonenshine, left in July. At the State Department, Mr. Stengel will join other former print veterans: journalist Douglas Frantz was named assistant secretary of state for public affairs earlier this month and Boston.com politics editor Glen Johnson announced that he was leaving the website in January to become a senior State Department adviser.
