Mary Alouette.
Have Sunday brunch with award-winning gypsy jazz band Mary Alouette & the Bailsmen on the rooftop of Hotel Chantelle on the Lower East Side. The Bushwick-based singer was born Mary Kavalauskas, but she took Mary Alouette as a pseudonym so that she could perform in international jazz clubs without a visa and as an homage to her favorite singers, Maria Callas, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone, who all had stage names. Ms. Alouette’s current musical incarnation, The Lark, is a mix of traditional gypsy jazz with hip-hop and trap beats.
Hotel Chantelle, 92 Ludlow Street, (212) 254-9100, 1-4pm.
