New York City’s first sweltering summer weekend was marred by a spate of gun violence in four of the five boroughs.

The Daily News reported that at least six New Yorkers were killed and nineteen more were injured over a period of less than 48 hours. Twelve people were shot in Brooklyn, eight in the Bronx, four in Queens, and one in Manhattan.

“With insane heat often comes insane crime,” New York magazine commented.

Among the victims, an 11-year-old girl in Bedford-Stuyvesant was paralyzed after being struck by a stray bullet on Friday night. A teenager opened fire on rival gang members and she was caught in the crossfire. On Saturday night, a 15-year-old girl in the Bronx was shot in the leg while pushing a child in a baby carriage out of harm’s way.

The Daily News noted that this weekend’s violence represented 5 percent of this year’s approximately 440 shootings, which in fact represents a 23 percent decline in shootings over the same time period last year.

Marc La Vorgna, press secretary to Mayor Bloomberg, tweeted a response. “Context on shootings this wknd: fewest for that week in a decade," he wrote. "For year, shootings down 27% from record low. What we're doing is working.”
